Jewish Telegraph, February 2022

WHEN Harriet Caplan-Dean performs in SIX the Musical at The Lowry Theatre, Salford, in August, there will be a special woman on her mind โ€” her former drama teacher Sherrie Mayer.

Sherrie โ€” who died suddenly in December, 2018, aged just 62 โ€” taught Harriet at Manchesterโ€™s King David Primary School โ€” and had been supportive of her early forays into the theatrical world.

The 22-year-old will join the touring cast of hit musical Six in March. The current cast will perform its final show at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford on March 6 โ€” and the new cast make its debut two nights later at the same venue.

Six โ€” created by Toby Marlow, who is Jewish, and Lucy Moss โ€” imagines the six wives of King Henry VIII as a girl group arguing their cases to be crowned the best wife.

Harriet, 22, is listed as Super Swing, which means she has to learn all six main cast membersโ€™ roles.

โ€œIโ€™m absolutely ecstatic to join the Six UK tour,โ€ Harriet told me. โ€œItโ€™s been a dream of mine to work in the theatre industry since I was little and it means the world to me to be able to say Iโ€™m the first Orthodox practising Jewish Queen involved in Six.

โ€œIโ€™m so excited to be performing at The Lowry in my hometown this summer and would like to dedicate those performances to Sherrie.โ€

The former Pendleton College student graduated from Urdang Academy, London, with a BA Hons in professional dance and musical theatre degree, last year.

Her dissertation was entitled โ€˜How has the portrayal of Judaism and Jewish characters in musical theatre evolved over the 20th centuryโ€™.

In August, she took part in a workshop for new musical Tinker Bell, alongside a number of established West End performers.

And in December she hit the headlines while playing a villager in Theatre Royal Bathโ€™s pantomime Cinderella.

Dani Harmer, who was playing the Fairy Godmother, was taken to hospital in the middle one of the performances โ€” and Harriet had to step into the role after the interval.

Tracy Beaker star Harmer, who was eight months pregnant at the time, tweeted: โ€œMe and baby are absolutely fine. But on Wednesday I had to go to hospital mid-show.

โ€œTurns out it was Braxton Hicks (horrible bloody things by the way) and was told by the doctors to rest up . . .โ€

She sent the โ€œbiggest thank youโ€ to Harriet โ€œwho stepped in mid-show with no rehearsal and has been looking after my magic wand for me!โ€

Six also has productions in the West End, on Broadway and on tour in Australia and New Zealand.

The Six tour includes Edinburgh Festival Theatre (March 15โ€“26), Leeds Grand Theatre (March 29- April 2), New Theatre, Hull (April 5โ€“10), Liverpool Empire Theatre (April 12โ€“16), Sheffield Lyceum Theatre (April 19โ€“30), Glasgow Theatre Royal (June 14โ€“19) and The Lowry, Salford (August 2โ€“14).
